FoRo ARQuitectos is a small architecture firm ethically and creatively dedicated to the design of Integral Landscape resulting from the encounter of the artificial and the natural and/or the existing and the new artificial landscapes, within the boundaries of environmentally responsible design and site and time specific architectures that are deeply rooted in place.
He was born in San José, Costa Rica on April 7, 1949. Graduated from the City College of the City University of New York in 1973.
Between 1967 and 1991 he worked with prestigious architectural firms, among them H.O.K. and Julian & Barbara Neski in New York; Gassner Nathan & Browne, in Memphis and DYPSA in San José.
In 1976 he founded the firm Fournier_Rojas Architects.
He has taught design and architecture since 1976. In 1993 he founded the alternative and experimental University of Design and its School of Architecture and Environmental Studies, which he directed for nearly 20 years as Rector / Dean until 2012.
In 1976-1978 he designed major expansions at the Juan Santamaría International Airport. In 1980-82 he designed the higly aclaimed Omni Center Building in San José. Some of his recent projects have won international awards and have been published locally and internationally, among them Casa Williamson, Casa_Studio Fo_Ro_ARQ, Construction Company Van der Laat & Jiménez Headquarters, the Uxarrací Center for Post-professional Architectural & Engineeringn Studies and the Community Center of El Rodeo de Mora, which recently won a WAC Award, and an S.ARCH AWARD in Budva, Montenegro, and that has been published in several magazines, among them Architectural Record.
He has given more than 50 lectures in Latin America, the United States, Europe and China, the most recent last April in Salem, North Carolina, and in May in Budva, Montenegro, in the Balkans. About 60 of his articles have been published in Costa Rica and other countries.
He is co_founder and organizer of "Mundaneum International re_Unión on Architecture. " Also, co_founder, with architect James Wines of SITE, urban planner Michael Sorkin and architectural/urban design educator Mauricio Quirós, of the Nomad Institute for Planetary Design_New York and its Nomad School for Planetary Design, a revolutionary graduate program in urban studies that is in process of global launching.
He is currently a member of the Scientific Committee for the UIA 2017 SEOUL World Architects Congress.

Sylvia Fournier is an architect, artist, photographer, graphic and jewelry designer born in San José, Costa Rica in 1968. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Arts of the University of Costa Rica (1991) and a professional Bachelor of Architecture degree (Licenciatura en Arquitectura) from the School of Architecture and Environmental Studies of Universidad del Diseño (1999) where she graduated with honors and received the Best Thesis Award. She is a Registered Architect and Active Member of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Costa Rica since 1999.
Ms. Fournier joined Fournier-Rojas ARQUITECTOS in 1995 and in 2002 became a partner. She has worked on numerous projects such as the Inter-American Development Bank Offices in San José, various interior design projects for the offices of Constructora Van der Laat & Jiménez in San Pedro, Casa Matamoros-Jiménez in Tres Ríos, Casa Williamson and Bali High Complex, both in Punta Achiote/Dominical; Casa Ayacucho in Dominical and several fair stands such as Ford National Automotive and M&J Real Estate, Inc.
Before joining Fournier-Rojas ARQUITECTOS she was a graphic and creative designer for newspapers such as “La Nación” and “La República”, both in San José. She also was a photographer por “La Nación” newspaper. Ms. Fournier is a freelance graphic designer and photographer. She has received national awards for her art and photography work.
Ms. Fournier has been a Professor of various levels of Architectural Design Studios at the School of Architecture and Environmental Studies of Universidad del Diseño (University of Design) in San José.
